Polytechnic Institute of Northern Canada Receives Five-Year Accreditation
Effective January 1, 2026
Yellowknife, NT — The Polytechnic Institute of Northern Canada is proud to announce that it has officially received authorization to operate as a Private Training Institution in the Northwest Territories, following a favourable decision by the Minister. The five-year Certificate of Registration takes effect January 1, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the institution and northern post-secondary education.
Dr. Chehrazade Aboukinane, President of the Polytechnic Institute of Northern Canada, and Mr. Rocky Simpson, former MLA and current Chair of the Academic Council, expressed their shared enthusiasm and optimism for the future.
“We are absolutely thrilled to begin the new year with this important accreditation,” said Dr. Aboukinane. “What a powerful way to start 2026. This authorization affirms the academic integrity, quality assurance, and institutional vision that guide our work. It strengthens our ability to deliver high-quality, career-focused education tailored to the realities and opportunities of the North.”
The accreditation confirms that the Polytechnic Institute of Northern Canada meets all regulatory requirements and has been granted authorization for a five-year term.
Several months prior to the decision, the institution formally transitioned its name from College of Northern Canada to Polytechnic Institute of Northern Canada. This change reflects the evolution of its mandate, expanded programming, and commitment to applied, industry-aligned, and workforce-responsive education. The accreditation has been issued under the Institute’s new name, aligning regulatory recognition with its strategic direction.
Mr. Rocky Simpson, Chair of the Academic Council, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the achievement:
“This accreditation is the result of strong leadership, academic rigor, and a shared commitment to excellence,” said Mr. Simpson. “The Academic Council is proud to support an institution that is focused on accountability, relevance, and opening meaningful learning pathways for adults across the North. We look forward to working together to take the Institute to new heights.”
Both leaders emphasized that this milestone is only the beginning. As the Institute moves into implementation and program delivery, continued collaboration among leadership, faculty, and partners will ensure programs remain responsive to learner needs and northern community priorities.
“Together, we are creating opportunities for high-quality learning that empower adults in the North and contribute to sustainable economic and community development,” added Dr. Aboukinane.
Further details regarding program delivery and next steps will be shared in the coming months.
